Adopting new EdTech? Here’s a tip!

This time of year, brings school closures, and whole lot of giving and cheer with family, friends, and planning ahead. Every holiday season that comes and goes it seems like gifts that marginally increase in abundance over time are electronics. You know, the new hot – tech. For all the years throughout the millennial generation and gen-i, it seems like everyone is either being given new tech or gifted it to someone.

After seeing my brothers open the gift of Virtual Reality (VR) for their Playstation, I could see them overwhelmed with joy, happiness, tears, and a little fear. The same happened the year before when my 85 year old grandpa unwrapped a new iWatch. With many decades splitting them apart they still experienced similar feelings. What came in the days following (or minutes following in my brother’s case) is how they took vastly different approaches for adopting new technology.

Give it time

In my industry, time and time again, I see school administrators and educators purchase new technology, then without giving it any time expect to be experts out of the box. Without some previous exposure to the technology this won’t happen. In many cases it takes a period of time and training to adopt. Let’s look at my brothers with their new VR.

First, just the setup required involved taking every family member we had to attach the cords to the right areas. With VR you need space to perform actions. ALOT of space. My brothers weren’t ones to take a tutorial or read a manual, however they were big into “trial and error training” when it came to this new tech. There short trials came with BIG errors – like a nice fist size hole in the drywall.

My grandpa with iWatch came from a different cloth than my brothers – the one where you always read the book before you jump in. He would try to understand the deepest capacities of the product just by reading the manual and bookmark checkpoints when he encountered things that might be useful to him. Yes, reading the book takes time, but this is the time he needed to learn his new technology.

Without proper training, from well-made training materials or hands-on training from an expert, your new tech adoption for your school or everyday life could quickly crash. Maybe not in the sense of my brother’s “I got carried away with it” literal example, but it can certainly put up a roadblock from you achieving your goals with that technology.

Try all your adoption options

Now, I’m not going to say that one adoption method will work better than the other, but here’s what I can summarize for you. Whether it is adopting new technology that is just an add-on to a current system you’re already utilizing such as adding an electronic timeclock to your current business software, a full blown base system makeover (a new Student Information System or ERP), or an entirely new piece to your edtech kit (learning management system), its important to know what you’re getting into and take advantage of all the training tools available for the product. In most cases, the way one person “gets it” won’t be the same way in the classroom next door.

Allow you, your peers, and your staff to venture on their on path of adoption, don’t force them down the path of one-way.
